Wallets
A wallet is a small, folding case used for holding personal items such as money, credit cards, ID and driver’s license. They are typically made of leather or fabric, are small and flat. The term ‘wallet’ has been used since the 1st century AD to refer to a knapsack for carrying things. The English word ‘wallet’ was first used around the 14th century, and its origins are uncertain. It is thought to be derived from either Old North French or from the Proto Germanic ‘wal-’ meaning ‘roll’.
In Ancient Greece a wallet would be used to carry provisions, mostly food. During the Renaissance the wallet began to take a shape that would carry coins, statements of accounts and other small articles. During the nineteenth century a wallet could also be used to carry dried meat, treasures and other personal items. It was made of leather and worn on one’s belt. It was actually considered uncivilised to put it in one’s pocket. Today wallets are made pocket-sized and with multiple card slots for credit cards.
