These gauntlet gloves are made of goatskin leather, a very soft and supple material. Softer than cowskin and tougher than sheepskin leather, it is comfortable, stylish and durable. Goatskin leather is also lightweight, flexible, water-resistant, warm and waterproof. It contains a distinctive pebble grain that colors beautifully. There are two types of goatskin leather: straight-grained (where all the grains run in the same direction) and crushed (produced by flattening the ridges with ironing or rolling).  These gloves are lined with tricot, a very soft and durable lining material.

Gauntlet Gloves

There are various types of gauntlet gloves, with the common feature being an extended cuff covering the wrist and part of the forearm. Typically, gloves only cover the wrist. Historically, gauntlets were a peace of armour made out of chainmail or plate armour. With the introduction of firearms hand-to-hand combat became much less common, making gauntlets unnecessary. However, gauntlet gloves are still used in various industries and sports. For example, protective gauntlets are used in fencing, by butchers, are incorporated in space suits and snowmobile driver mittens. Gauntlets are also traditionally worn by the Pope of the Roman Catholic Church.

The history of gauntlets has also spawned several idioms in the English language, including to “throw down the gauntlet” and to “run the gauntlet”. The former referred to the issuing of a challenge, originating with medieval knights. The latter refers to a military punishment where a soldier would have to pass between a double row soldiers armed with cudgels. The use of the term ‘gauntlet’ is derived from the Swedish term to ’street run’ (gatlopp) though, not from the word gauntlet as a glove.
